Kajol was born to yesteryear actor Tanuja and film director
Shomu Mukherjee on August 5, 1974. She was an extremely mischievous child, also
very stubborn and impulsive. Today she’s known for incredible silver screen
success and effortless acting skills. Kajol has appeared in numerous Bollywood
films and has also worked in Tamil cinema.
At the age of 16, when she was studying at the St Joseph
Convent school in Panchgani, Kajol got her first Bollywood break. Director
Rahul Rawail of Arjun fame cast Kajol in his film Bekhudi. Subsequently, Kajol
bagged her second lead role opposite Shahrukh Khan in Baazigar. The film was a
major success and Kajol became a known name in every household in India.
After Baazigar, Kajol quit studies, as she thought acting
was more interesting. Kajol then went on to work with SRK in movies like Karan
Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie
Gham and My Name is Khan. She has worked in more than 35 Hindi films and has bagged
six Filmfare awards, the highest by any female actor in the industry. In 2011,
the Government of India honoured Kajol with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest
civilian honour in the country, for her contribution to Indian cinema.
Kajol married actor Ajay Devgn in 1995 and has two children
with him – nine-year-old daughter Nysa and two-year-old son Yug. Kajol
describes motherhood as fab and also believes that it brings out the best in
her.
